| Welcome message from Tim Oyer, President and Managing Partner | Ed Gates, Firm Chairman, talks about our core values |
Not long ago, a survey of our shareholders and associates reaffirmed the core values under which we practice. Among these values, the three most important are: sufficient time for family, mutual respect and trust for one other at work, and maintaining a collegial environment within the firm.
Other essential ingredients to cultivating the legal practice we love include: maintaining a mix of challenging work from clients we enjoy, delivering excellence in our work product, zealously pursuing the best interest of our clients, and maintaining the highest ethical standards.
Our values drive firm decisions. We choose work that is varied, interesting, cutting-edge, and important to our clients’ business. Firm strategic decisions, as well as day-to-day practice choices, are governed by our core values.
We choose clients carefully. If you join us, you will enjoy relationships with clients who are leaders in their industries and who appreciate who we are and what we can do for them. We turn away prospective clients whose goals we do not share or whose work we don't believe would be enjoyable or challenging.
We invest in your training. We are committed to a long-term investment strategy when it comes to the professional development of our associates and technology specialists (tech specs). We adopted the motto "Attract-Develop-Retain" to emphasize our dedication to hiring and keeping the best people by investing in them, over the long term, through formal and informal training programs. We respect work/life balance. One way we preserve our core values is by maintaining one of the lowest billable hour requirements for associates (while simultaneously offering them among the highest starting salaries) at major Boston law firms — and our shareholders have the same requirements as associates.
IP is our focus. You will benefit in many ways from being at a firm devoted solely to intellectual property. We believe IP to be the most exciting field in the legal industry, and we appreciate our partnerships with clients whose inventions, products, and services are changing our world for the better. Our allegiance to protecting and enforcing our clients' intellectual property provides a common purpose and a more interconnected firm. Hear our Shareholder, Michael Albert, relate how our culture differs from general practice firms. Get the Flash Player to see this player.
Our structure makes us agile. Much of the responsibility for managing work flow, training, hiring, client acceptance, business development, and practice management rests at the practice group level. This allows for quick decisions and responses, as well as the development of group-specific training initiatives and industry-related activities.
We value community service. Many of our attorneys are heavily involved in civic and other volunteer work, or in artistic, cultural, or athletic pursuits. If you are passionate about doing pro bono work, you can join others at the firm who contribute to the public interest through our formal pro bono program.
We really, truly like working together! At Wolf Greenfield, you will share in an informal atmosphere where the exchange of questions, thoughts, and ideas is open and encouraged. Attire at the firm is business casual every day (with jeans an option on Fridays). We enjoy firm-wide, group-wide, and cross-group social activities, and both planned and impromptu get-togethers. We would be thrilled to have you join our notorious softball team or our championship basketball team (check out the photo to see the trophy and hear our Tech Spec and Team Captain, Kuangshin Tai, talk about what he gained from starting the team.)
