Ling Cheung Hughes
Ling Cheung Hughes assists the firm in various patent matters, including application drafting, U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, clearance and patentability studies, and patent litigation and licensing support.
Ling has expertise in the areas of formal verification, information security, distributed computing, cryptography, and mathematical logic.
- Drafted patent applications related to software, hardware, networking technologies, medical devices, and consumer products.
- Assisted in U.S. and foreign patent prosecution in a wide range of areas, including communications, e-commerce, electronics, software, and storage systems.
- Helped early-stage startup company analyze pending patent applications of large competitor and evaluate risk of infringement as barrier to market entry.

- Performed prior art searches and patentability studies for small company in field of medical devices.
As a graduate student, she conducted research in modeling and verifying embedded system algorithms and randomized network algorithms using various techniques, including theorem proving and model checking. After finishing her Ph.D., she worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Theory of Computing Group at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
Ling worked on a number of projects at MIT, including security of long-lived services (such as signatures and timestamps) and pairing-based encryption. Ling also worked as a research consultant for MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, where she developed a group key management protocol with military applications in high latency and low connectivity communication environments.
