O. Tobias BrambrinkTobias Brambrink assists the Biotechnology Group in patent prosecution. His areas of expertise include genetics, molecular biology, cell biology, and developmental biology. Previous Experience
Tobias conducted his postdoctoral work in Rudolf Jaenisch's laboratory at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, MA, where he employed molecular biology and genetic engineering tools to delineate molecular mechanisms of somatic cell reprogramming and embryonic stem cell maintenance and differentiation. During his time at Whitehead, he authored and co-authored several publications in leading scientific journals including Nature, Science, Cell, Cell Stem Cell, and PNAS. Some of Tobias’ work on nuclear transfer derived embryonic stem cells and reprogramming of somatic cells without the use of an embryo has received broad public attention, and his 2008 publication in Cell Stem Cell was featured on the cover of the journal. For his graduate studies, Tobias joined the laboratory of Heiner Niemann at the Institute for Animal Breeding in Mariensee, Germany. His research there focused on somatic cell nuclear transfer in farm animals, and he developed a method to assay global transcriptional profiles in individual mammalian preimplantation embryos of mice and cattle. As part of his master’s thesis, completed in Ulrich Zimmermann’s laboratory at the University of Wuerzburg, Germany, Tobias developed a scalable method for the preparation of ultrapure biocompatible alginate from brown algae, useful for the encapsulation of microorgans in xenotransplantation. Also Noteworthy
Tobias discussed his PNAS article as an invited guest on National Public Radio’s “Talk of the Nation, Science Friday” in 2006. During his time at the Whitehead Institute, Tobias managed a BL2+ virus production facility, and he is co-inventor on a Whitehead patent application related to somatic cell reprogramming. Tobias is fluent in German. |
