A limited monopoly afforded by a patent is not only legal but encouraged under US law. The source of this legality and encouragement comes directly from our Constitution, specifically the Commerce Clause. Think about it: a limited monopoly, in our free-enterprise capitalistic society. As a result, patents can be and often are enormously valuable. Some people have made a lot of money from them. Others have not.
