Proposed Changes to Copyright Office Fees

April 17, 2008

The U.S. Copyright Office plans to increase certain fees effective July 1, 2006. The rationale behind the proposed fee increase is to adjust certain fees to offset the Office’s increased costs of providing various services. Previous fee increases occurred in 1999 and 2002.

The proposed fee increases include fees for basic registration, renewal, document recordation, and special services. While the fees on average will increase by $15.00 per transaction, the basic registration filing fee will be increased by 50% from $30 to $45. In addition, fees for certain special services such as expedited processing and Office searching services will be doubled.

See attached schedule of the current and proposed fees.
