Controller

The Controller will be responsible for the day-to-day accounting functions for the Finance Department. Overall responsibilities include,  accounts payable,  general ledger in the Finance Department bank reconciliations, cash control, taxes, financial reporting and system balancing. This person will show proven leadership skills as a supervisor to members of the Accounting team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage the accuracy and productivity of day-to-day activities of accounts payable, cash disbursements/reconciliation, invoicing/billing, fixed asset records, general ledger & entity accounting, revenue recognition, cost accounting, system balancing, taxes etc.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibility for direct reports, including interviewing, hiring, planning, assigning, directing work, rewarding, disciplining employees, performance reviews, and addressing complaints and resolving problems
  • Support month-end and year-end reconciliation and close process
  • Oversee firm corporate credit accounts
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting, including journal entries as needed for the General Ledger
  • Manages and oversees the reconciliation of cash, multiple bank accounts, cost batches from third-party vendors, etc. in a timely and accurate manner
  • Safeguard assets and assure accurate and timely recording of all transactions by implementing disciplines of internal audits, controls and checks across all departments
  • Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government annual fee and reporting requirements and tax filings in Firm’s various locations including but not limited to Massachusetts, New York and Florida
  • Maintain compliance with technical accounting needs, research and implement solutions when necessary
  • Manages and oversees the incoming and outgoing wire transfers
  • Interface with outside commercial banks(s), audit firms(s), banks and lessors, casualty/liability insurance agent(s), credit card companies, and collection agencies to maintain beneficial relationships for the firm.
  • Manages and oversees the preparation and issue of 1099s
  • Develop and document accounting policies and processes to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting
  • Assist in the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variance
  • Assure that assets are not awkwardly encumbered with personal guarantees or unrealistic commitments
  • Work closely with the Director of Finance to assure financial plans are consistent with organizational goals
  • Work closely with Director of Finance in the development and economic evaluation of various fringe benefit programs for staff and program components
  • Provide hands on support to prepare, develop, improve and issue timely monthly financial records for Directors and/or Executive Committee
  • Participates in a leadership capacity to ensure accounting is consistently supporting all firm business needs and setting a tone of service for all department areas.
  • May be asked to perform additional duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven experience working as a Financial Controller
  • 5 or more  years of overall combined accounting and finance experience
  • Exhibits proven leadership skills managing a team of 2 or more
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related, Master’s preferred
  • Experience with Elite Enterprise along with strong Excel skills
  • CPA or CMA preferred
  • Experience with general ledger, accounts payable functions and month-end/year end close processes
  • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills
  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize in a high pressure environment with ever changing priorities and deadlines
  • Flexibility and capacity to respond calmly, efficiently, and effectively in stressful situations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
